Reading ETF flows — two caveats
- Institutional numbers are distorted by market makers. Liquidity providers hedge ETF inventory as part of normal operations, so institutional ETF flows mix genuine positioning with mechanical LP activity. Foreign and retail columns are cleaner signals.
- Leveraged and inverse products are trading vehicles, not holdings. Flows there reflect short-term directional bets (often retail) rather than long-term allocation.
